What Is RFID Blocking and Do You Actually Need It?
What Is RFID Blocking and Do You Actually Need It?
RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification. It’s the technology inside your credit cards, key cards, and transit passes that lets them transmit data wirelessly. That’s how you tap to pay or swipe through entry points without contact.
The downside is that RFID chips can be read without you knowing. Someone walking past you with the right scanner could skim your card data without ever touching your wallet.
That’s where RFID blocking comes in.
What Is an RFID Blocking Wallet?
An RFID blocking wallet prevents wireless signals from reaching your cards. It uses materials like aluminum or carbon fiber to block scanners. That means your card info stays private, even in crowded areas.
Every Code 118 wallet is RFID protected by default. That includes our aluminum wallet, which forms the core of every build. Our Backplate also blocks RFID and attaches to the wallet as a modular upgrade. And our AirTag strap works seamlessly on top of these setups without reducing protection.
The leather case itself does not block RFID, but it wraps around the aluminum wallet. So if you’re using the leather case with the Code 118 wallet, your cards are still protected.
Do You Actually Need RFID Blocking?
RFID theft is not super common, but it does happen. The real question is, why take the risk when the fix is already built in?
You don’t have to do anything extra. There’s no app. No setup. RFID protection just works as long as you’re using a Code 118 wallet. If you carry tap to pay cards, it makes sense to keep them shielded.
Is Aluminum the Best Way to Block RFID?
Yes. Aluminum naturally blocks RFID signals. That’s why we use it as the core of the Code 118 wallet. It’s slim, strong, and lightweight. You don’t need any extra liners or cards to make it work. The material itself keeps you covered.
And if you want a traditional look, the leather case gives you that classic aesthetic while still wrapping around a fully protected aluminum frame.
Does RFID Blocking Interfere With Tracking?
Not at all. Our Tracker Card uses Bluetooth and works with Apple Find My or Android tracking networks. RFID blocking only affects card signals. It does not interfere with tracking.
So your cards are protected from being skimmed, and your wallet can still be tracked if it’s lost or stolen.
The Bottom Line
RFID blocking is one of those things that’s better to have and not need than the other way around. Every Code 118 wallet includes it by default, whether you go aluminum only, add a Backplate, or cover it with a leather case.
You get full protection, no setup, no compromises.
